What You Need to Know About Getting Braces
Orland Park, IL – Embarking on your journey to a straighter, healthier smile is exciting, and getting braces is a key step in this process. You might have some questions about what to expect during your braces placement appointment. Dr. Ayas Makki from Orland Park Orthodontics explains everything you need to know about getting braces.
What to Expect When Getting Braces
After your initial consultation, you’ll schedule an appointment for your braces placement. This procedure is straightforward and typically painless, but it’s best to plan your appointment for a day when you won’t feel rushed.
The Braces Placement Process
1. Teeth Cleaning: We begin by thoroughly cleaning your teeth to remove any bacteria or debris. This ensures the brackets will adhere properly.
2. Bracket Application: Each tooth will receive a bracket attached with a special bonding glue. We use a tool to keep your mouth dry and your tongue out of the way. Once all the brackets are in place, a special light hardens the glue, securing the brackets.
3. Wire Insertion: Next, we insert the archwire through each bracket. Tiny elastic bands, known as ligatures, hold the wire in place. You can choose colorful elastics to personalize your braces. We’ll trim the archwire to prevent it from irritating your mouth.
Duration and Sensations
The entire process usually takes between one and two hours. You might feel some pressure in your mouth, but pain is rare. If you experience any sore spots, inform Dr. Makki so adjustments can be made.
Post-Placement Comfort
It’s normal to feel some discomfort after getting braces. This usually fades within a day or so as your mouth adjusts. You might have minor pain when eating and some jaw tenderness. Over-the-counter pain relievers, warm saltwater rinses, and cold compresses can help.
Diet Recommendations
For the first few days, stick to soft foods to ease your transition. Consider these options:
• Mashed potatoes
• Oatmeal
• Yogurt
• Soft-cooked vegetables
• Scrambled eggs
• Soft fruits like bananas
• Pasta and macaroni and cheese
• Smoothies
Your mouth, cheeks, and lips may be tender as they adapt to the brackets. Applying orthodontic wax to sensitive areas can provide relief.
Adjusting to Braces
Though the first few days with braces might feel challenging, you’ll quickly adjust. Getting braces is a simple procedure that sets you on the path to a beautiful new smile.
