What to Do If a Bracket Comes Loose on Your Braces
Orland Park, IL – If you have traditional braces, occasional issues like a loose bracket or broken wire can occur. While these situations are not emergencies, they require attention to avoid discomfort and treatment disruptions. Here’s what you should do if you experience a dental issue with your braces.
Protect your mouth first. A broken wire or loose bracket can have sharp edges that might injure your mouth. Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp parts until you can see your orthodontist.
Handling a loose bracket. If a bracket becomes loose but remains attached to the wire, use sanitized tweezers to reposition it comfortably. Contact your orthodontist to schedule an appointment for reattaching the bracket.
Dealing with broken or protruding wires. Broken wires can poke and irritate the inside of your mouth. Carefully clip the wire at the nearest bracket using clean nail clippers to prevent injury. Applying orthodontic wax to the area can also provide temporary relief.
Avoiding damage to your braces. To prevent issues, follow your orthodontist’s care instructions. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage your braces. If you play contact sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth. Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss carefully to avoid dislodging brackets or bending wires.
