Understanding Braces Discomfort: What to Expect and How to Manage It
Orland Park, IL – A common question about braces is whether they cause pain. While some discomfort is normal, wearing braces should not be excessively painful. Adjustments to the braces, especially after initial placement, may cause temporary tenderness.
Dr. Ayas Makki of Orland Park Orthodontics explains, “The initial appointment is straightforward – we assess your smile, take photos, and decide on the treatment plan. Placing the brackets and wires is usually pain-free. However, it’s normal to experience some tenderness as your teeth start to move.”
Managing Discomfort
Discomfort often arises a few days after placing or adjusting braces. Using orthodontic wax can relieve
irritation, and sticking to soft foods can ease discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, and chewing gum with Xylitol may also provide relief.
Regular Adjustments
Visits every 10 to 12 weeks involve adjustments to the braces, which may cause brief discomfort as new wires apply additional pressure. This is a normal part of the process and ensures your teeth are moving as planned.
When to Seek Help
Minor discomfort is expected, but if you experience severe pain, sharp sensations, or prolonged discomfort, contact your orthodontist. Addressing these issues promptly will help ensure a smoother orthodontic experience.
